Flamingo Land bioeconomy trail

Poo power, pink flamingos and planet-saving science! Our trail at Flamingo Land is the perfect activity for budding bio-explorers. Ten stops. Ten surprising facts. One big adventure.
What’s the trail all about?
Did you know animal poo can help make clean energy? Or that plants are being used to build supercars?
Welcome to the Bioeconomy Trail, a ten-stop adventure around Flamingo Land’s zoo. At every stop you’ll meet an amazing animal, discover a fantastic fact and answer a trail question. Each answer has a letter. Choose the one you think is correct and write down on your trail sheet. If you get them all right, they’ll spell out a special word.
Along the way you’ll find out how scientists, businesses and inventors right here in Yorkshire are using nature to help tackle climate change. You'll also learn how Flamingo Land helps endangered species like the native crayfish, and how beavers are making a comeback in the British countryside thanks to their brilliant conservation work.
So what’s a bioeconomy? It’s a clever way of using living things, like plants, microbes, food waste and yes, even animal poo, to make the things we need, instead of using oil, coal and gas.
Win a return trip to Flamingo Land!

A word for the grown-ups
Children are naturally curious about animals, which makes the zoo a brilliant place to introduce big ideas about sustainability. The trail is designed to get the whole family chatting about how we can look after the planet, and to spark ideas about future careers in science, conservation and engineering.York and North Yorkshire is already a UK leader in the bioeconomy, with more than 7,000 businesses in the sector. The trail brings that science out of the lab and into the zoo, so your family can see it for themselves.
The Bioeconomy Trail is led by the York and North Yorkshire Bioeconomy Cluster, backed by the University of York through BioYorkshire and funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. It’s hosted at Flamingo Land, where conservation and education are part of everything the zoo does.

The Bioeconomy Cluster is supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
