On Tuesday 2nd September, Rachael Maskell MP met with the Minister at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Lord Patrick Vallance, alongside the University of York Prof. Ian Graham, Prof. Sarah Thompson, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and Dr Andrew Swift, CEO at FERA Science, to talk about BioYorkshire.
At this meeting, the participants discussed how government is advancing the scientific base of our country, the importance of bioscience and bioengineering, how the full circular economy eliminates waste, ensuring farming remains productive and how climate challenges in chemicals, agriculture and energy can be addressed.
Rachael Maskell MP says:
“The vision, expertise and opportunity that the BioYorkshire leaders bring truly captured the attention of the Minister and his officials as to how the practical application of science can address the challenges of our time. Having worked with the University of York, FERA Science and Askham Bryan College on this project over many years, I am hopeful that we will be able to see their hard work come to fruition for the sake of our country and our fragile planet. The power of BioYorkshire will be the economic and employment opportunities it will bring to our unique region, and it is great having the backing of David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire to help us take this forward.”
Prof. Ian Graham, Academic Lead for BioYorkshire says:
“Our aim for BioYorkshire, in partnership with industry, is to accelerate both the translation of research discoveries into full scale biotechnology applications and the training that is needed to support the growing bioeconomy workforce. This was a great opportunity to talk with Lord Vallance about the investment in infrastructure that is now needed to make this happen.”
Prof Sarah Thompson, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research says:
“The University of York is committed to using our research to address societal challenges and drive economic development. BioYorkshire is a great example of how a strong partnership between universities, industry and skills providers can realise this potential.”
Dr Andrew Swift, CEO of FERA says:
"Since its inception Fera Science Ltd has strongly invested in the progression of BioYorkshire because its aims and purpose respond to the demand we experience from our national and international customer base of responsible organisations seeking to grow in the bioeconomy. We were proud to update the Minister on our progress since he last visited us in York and very motivated to hear his encouragement.”
